Paul McCue Obituary – Rochester Democrat And Chronicle

Paul E. McCue, 96, passed away on Oct. 10th in Burlington, NC. He was born and raised in Lowville, NY, son of Melvin and Ella (Meyer) McCue. He is survived by three children, Ann/Jeff Gross, John/Tracy Page and Jennifer McCue and by two grandchildren, Alice Owens and Mitchell McCue. He is also survived by in-laws Reggie Ferguson and Judy Hand and by several nieces and nephews.

Paul grew up on his parent’s dairy farm. He graduated from Lowille Academy in 1945 and immediately entered the US Navy. Since WWII was drawing down, he was soon moved from radio school in Great Lakes (Chicago) to the Pacific theater. He served aboard the USS Bowditch and spent part of his time measuring ocean depths in the Bikini Atoll. He was present at the first Bikini nuclear detonation.

After the service Paul attended Samson College for a while and then returned to Lowville. In Lowville, he became active in local Democratic Party politics and he played drums in the American Legion drum and bugle corps. He married Patricia Sibley in 1952 and became a father to Ann. Paul and Pat moved to Rochester, NY in 1954 where he got a job with Kodak. Pat died in 1956 and Paul married Pauline Ferguson in 1958. They had two children, John and Jennifer. Pauline died in 2021 after 63 years of marraige.

Paul was an engineer and organizer at heart. He worked in that capacity at Xerox for most of his career. He was also an amateur woodworker and he used both talents to improve and beautify the family home. He was a Boy Scout leader when his son was a scout. In the 1980’s he came active in organizing reunions of his Navy shipmates, which he did for several years. He and Pauline enjoyed many years of trailer camping around the US and Canada. He was a talented storyteller and he was also very active in his local churches (Trinity Episcopal in Lowville, NY, St. Andrew’s Episcopal in Rochester, NY and St. Andrew’s Episcopal in Haw River, NC) where he served many vestry terms.

Paul and Pauline moved to Fairport, NY in 1972 and they moved to Graham, NC in 2005. Paul moved to Cedar Ridge Independant Living, Burlington in 2021. He spent the last two weeks of his life under the excellent hospice care provided by AuthoraCare Collective.

Paul was predeceased by 7 siblings and their spouses (Mary/James Kelly, Anna/Ray Gordon, Robert/Marie McCue, Doris/Art Stanton, Sarah/Don Tiffany, John/Dorothy McCue, Shirley/Chet Adydan). He was also predeceased by most of Pauline’s siblings and their spouses and by several nephews and nieces.

A funeral of Christian burial will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, US 70, Haw River NC on Friday Oct.13th at 10am with Rev. Miriam Saxon officiating. Burial will follow at Graham (NC) Memorial Park, 1402 E. Gilbreath Street.
