Local Fill a Purse for Sister campaign now accepting donations

Drop off new or gently used handbags, backpacks or totes, along with personal care items and gift cards by Dec. 2

The fifth annual local Fill a Purse for a Sister campaign is underway – and local residents can get involved.

The drive collects new and gently used purses and backpacks for December distribution to women’s shelters, crisis centres and other social services where there is need in Burlington, Hamilton and Oakville. They are also looking for donations of personal products and hygiene items, gift cards for local grocery stores and monetary donations to purchase items to fill the purses.

Individuals can participate, and businesses can get in on the fun by creating an office challenge – every donation is welcome.

Since its start in 2019, the response has grown steadily, from about 50 purses filled with personal items in the first year to over 350 in 2022. Last year’s drive also garnered $1,500 in cash and gift cards.

All of the items and funds were dispersed to agencies in Halton and Hamilton, including Good Shepherd, Mission Services, Salvation Army, Interval House, Shifra House, Halton Women’s Centre and Burlington Food Bank.

This year, donations will be accepted until Dec. 2.
