Burlington Police officer seriously injured while arresting suspect

A Burlington police officer was seriously injured while chasing a suspect on Wednesday morning.The Burlington Police Department arrested 21-year-old Malcom Sovey of Milton after he crashed a stolen vehicle on Battery Street and fled on foot.The officer, who was not named, suffered a serious injury while taking Sovey into custody, according to officials.The condition of the officer is currently unknown. NBC5 has reached out to the department to learn more.Chittenden County Sheriff’s Deputies had spotted Sovey driving a stolen vehicle at 3 a.m. and attempted to pull him over during a traffic stop, but he sped away from the deputies and evaded capture.Burlington police caught up to Sovey less than an hour later and began a pursuit, before he crashed the vehicle and attempted to run away.Investigators said Sovey has a criminal history that includes arrests for assault and robbery with a deadly weapon as well as unlawful restraint dating back to 2019.He was transported to court and charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault, resisting arrest and eluding a police officer.
