Able to walk again, MSP trooper injured in crash leaves hospital

Massachusetts State Police Trooper Matthew McRae, who was seriously injured in an August car crash while visiting Utah, is walking again and will continue his recovery at home.McRae walked out of Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown with a cane Saturday morning and received a full police escort home.Video shared Thursday by the State Police Association of Massachusetts showed McRae walking with a cane during his rehab work at Spaulding.”Trooper McRae’s incredible progress, highlighted by his renewed ability to walk, is a testament to his unwavering spirit and resolute intention of rejoining his fellow Troopers,” SPAM President Patrick McNamara said in a statement. McRae, who is based at the Belchertown Barracks, was visiting family in Salt Lake City at the time of the crash that caused his injury. He was riding in a ride-share vehicle that was struck by another vehicle on Aug. 25. McRae suffered several broken bones in the crash, including a broken neck and spinal injury, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the injured trooper.The driver of the other vehicle was subsequently arrested for operating under the influence and a passenger was arrested for providing false information.McRae was initially treated in the Intensive Care Unit at the University of Utah Hospital before being returned to Massachusetts on Sept. 7. He was also treated at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington before moving to Spaulding Rehab. McRae graduated with the 85th Recruit Training Troop and was sworn in at Gillette Stadium on May 6, 2020. He previously served for three years as a local police officer in Berlin, Massachusetts.
